Assembly of European Horticultural Regions

logo smartprotectThe General Assembly of the project SmartProtect “SMART agriculture for innovative vegetable crop PROTECTion: harnessing advanced methodologies and technologies was held on the 11 & 12 of March 2021 by videoconference due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation.

The objective of meeting was to provide a general overview of the activities carried out in the last thirteen months of the project as well to plan the next upcoming activities for the remaining twenty-one months.

During the meeting, the data collection activity was discussed and a short overview of the database was presented. Data were collected online and remotely due to health restrictions. Approximately 200 technologies were collected, they are divided into four technical themes:

  • application techniques,
  • decision support techniques,
  • diagnosis
  • and detection techniques and monitoring techniques.

These technologies will be compared in the benchmarking activities. The benchmarking methodologies and technologies activity consists of obtaining an overview of the SMART IPM, they will be evaluated per regulatory zone with a focus on the most relevant regions and countries for the production of the predefined demonstration crops. Regulatory zones are used in this approach instead of a limiting approach, as would be the use of relevant climate zones, to avoid zoning within countries, to make the analysis more meaningful. The main advantages and disadvantages of using the respective technologies will be highlighted. On the other hand, the constraints of not using certain technologies in specific regions, by specific farmers or in specific crops will be documented and analyzed.

At the same time, knowledge exchange activities were discussed. The objective of this activity is to use the most suitable tools to facilitate communication and knowledge exchange between different target groups and different countries in European regions to discuss and disseminate IPM SMART approaches in vegetable production (outdoor and indoor, small and large farms). The essential aim is to make understandable tools with a specific language for each target group: assessing the potential of technologies for regional application in the project can lead to the exploitation of the most applicable technologies throughout Europe.

SMARTPROTECT is a thematic network focusing on cross regional knowledge sharing of SMART IPM solutions for farmers and advisors. Its aim is to stimulate knowledge flow in the regional AKISs (Agriculture Knowledge and Innovation Systems) across the EU and connect these on the innovative potential of advanced methodologies for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in vegetable production, integrating precision farming technologies and data analytics.
